49th Annual BBQ Picnic!

Information about the 2010 Barbecue

• Date: Saturday, May 15, 2010 -- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Location: East Lawn of the Veterans Memorial Bldg., Balboa Park, San Diego (near Roosevelt Jr. High School)
• Ticket Information
  • Tickets must be purchased by Wednesday, May 12. You can attend without a ticket, but you'll be missing a fantastic BBQ feast. No tickets sold at the door! $11 - Adults, $5 - kids 12 and under, Sodas and Water will be $1. Tickets are available from The Village Silversmiths, located in the SDM&G Building in Balboa Park, 1700 Village Place, San Diego, CA, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 7 days a week. And at Friday night meetings, and at most evening classes.

• Directions to the barbecue
  • Take Park Blvd. to Zoo Place, turn into the Zoo parking lot, proceed all the way to the north end.
  • There is free parking in the S.D. Zoo lot. The Veterans Memorial building lawn is just north of the Zoo lot.

   

• Official, Traditional and Flexible BBQ Schedule:
  • 8-10 a.m.        Hauling & setup.  Come help, see the Silent Auction goodies first!
  • 10 a.m.           Sign in and get name badges, for yourselves and your ugly rocks.
  • 12-1 p.m.       Turn in that ticket and eat delicious BBQ beef, ham, beans, potato salad.
  • 1:30 p.m.        Ugly Rock election ends, always fair, always final.  No recounts needed.
  • 2 p.m.             Approximate Ending Time of Silent Auction. 
  • 2:45 p.m.         Simon King starts calling the Door Prize winners.  Must be present to win!

• Silent Auction: The Society will have lots of equipment, tools, rocks, slabs, etc. Plus, you can sell up to 15 gem, mineral, or lapidary items on the Silent Auction tables. You set the minimum bid, the Society takes 10% of your final price, the rest is yours.

• Ugly Rock Contest: Bring out your REALLY UGLY rocks! Three categories: Embellished (decorated), Mimic, and Ugly. Prizes: 1st - $10, 2nd - $5, 3rd - $1 in each category.

• Seller's Tables: You, or your club, may bring card tables to sell rockhound items or lapidary crafts. The Society requests an up-front donation of $10 per seller.

• Door Prizes: Tickets will be on sale at the BBQ for the many beautiful door prizes in the display case. We've got petrified wood, bookends, jewelry, ammonites, spheres, eggs, jelly beans (why not?), polished slabs, carvings and more.  Everyone will want to win!

• Food! A g-r-e-a-t menu of BBQ beef, BBQ ham, BBQ beans, coleslaw, rolls & butter, yummy cake and cold beverages. Food will only be served between 12:00 - 1:00.

• Please Bring: Your own table and chairs, or a blanket to sit on.

• Do Not Bring: Alcohol, balloons, pets, glass bottles, bad attitudes.

• Please Remember: The City says, "Do not drive spikes or stakes into the lawn. Or else!"
